A standard colonoscopy will examine only the large intestine (colon) and rectum. The small intestine will require other tests. (1) Upper endoscopy will check part of the small intestine. (2) And double-balloon endoscopy or capsule endoscopy can check the rest. Other imaging tests can also be used. You should speak to your doctor to see if small intestine test is required or if only colonoscopy should be performed.
Hi.
Rectal bleeding can be due to causes like Hemorrhoids or piles, Anal fissures, Proctitis or inflammation of rectum, colon polyps, rectal ulcer, anal cancer etc..
Many a times any disease associated with upper G..I Tract can also cause rectal bleeding..
So in case of Rectal bleeding you should get both your intestines or in short the entire digestive tract scanned for being on a safer side..
As far as Colonoscopy is concerned it is the endoscopic examination of the large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus.
So for examination of other parts of the digestive tract like small intestine you need to go for tests like Upper Endoscopy or Esophagogastroduodenoscopy or EGD.
Other tests like Capsule Endoscopy, Double Balloon Enteroscpy, MRI scan, CT scan etc are other tests that can be done for confirmation..
So discuss with you doctor or Gastro and get examined accordingly..
