Surgeon said he had to take cartilage out from my jaw?

Hi , got my all 4 of my wisdom teeth out 7 months, but about 4 days ago i got sharp pain in my lower jaw bone , the surgeon said he had to talk cartilage out from my jaw when he was doing the operation, but i hadn’t had any previous pain before hand, and now its starting to effect my other side of my bottom jaw, just wondering could it be a bone infection thanks

  1. If the cartilage was excised then I believe it is arthritis pain and could affect the opposite side due to imbalance of jaw mechanics ,get an xray done …

  2. Hi
In my opinion It could be parotid gland inflammation or salivary duct obstruction
    Good Luck

  3. It could be , but infection will make it diffuse later, with swelling.. or it could be just start of inflammation… Start with analgesics

What suggestions did he provide you??

  4. hi,
if the cartilage was removed ,then this can be an onset of unilateral arthritis of the TM joint.
Loss of cartilage leads to reduction in synovial lubricant fluid between the two joint surfaces of the bones. This leads to friction between the opposing bones causing inflammation and pain.As there is a single bone (mandible) between both TM joints, affection of one will have adverse effect on the other.
    Get a CT scan done.
    thanks

  5. Hi..
    Thanks for the query..

As it is already 7 months, therefore the pain does not seems to be due to wisdom tooth site related infection or bone infection, but it seems to be related to either any other decayed teeth, generalised severe gum infection, or jaw joint related problems..

Teeth clenching or grinding habit can also be a cause.

So my suggestion is to consult a Dentist or an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical examination and investigation like a Panoromic x ray and once the cause is confirmed treatment can be advised..

As for now take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen, take soft diet and do cool compresses over the jaws..

    Hope this helps..

    Regards.
