Had a transvaginal ultrasound done, don’t see fetal pole, is it normal?

I’m a 21 y/o female and I recently had a transvaginal ultrasound done and was told that I am 5 weeks and 2 days. Since I am so early the only thing that I would be able to see is the Gestational Sac. It says “GS” where the sac is supposed to be but it’s difficult to make out and I don’t see any fetal pole and they told me it was too early to have a fetal pole. Is this normal at 5 weeks? I had a miscarriage in July 2016. They told me it was a blighted ovum.

  1. hi
it is normal to be unable to have a fetal pole at 5 weeks. Average time is 6-7 weeks. I guess,by next week to 10 days the fetal pole should be visible. Do not get apprehensive. Everything will be fine. Repeat the scan after 10 days.
    Thanks

  2. Hi and welcome to question doctors.com
Yes it is normal to not having a fetal pole before 5th and half to 6th and half weeks of gestation…
No need to worry another ultrasound scan should be done in 3-7 days. Due to the fact that pregnancy dating can be wrong, it would be much too early at this point to make a clear diagnosis on the outcome of the pregnancy.

  3. HI
IDEALLY YOU SHOULD HAVE A FETAL POLE BY NOW,BUT DEPENDS. SOME PREGNANCIES MAY SHOW FETAL POLE AT 6 +/- 1 WEEK. MAY BE AFTER A FEW DAYS THE FETAL POLE WILL APPEAR. ONLY IN RARE CASES,YOU MAY NOT SEE FETAL POLE EVEN AFTER 7 WEEKS.
SO I SUGGEST YOU SHOULD WAIT FOR ANOTHER 2 WEEKS AND GET THE SCAN REPEATED.

  4. hello there
Yes its absolutely expected not to have a fetal pole at 5 weeks. The gestational sac is just in the stage of formation. Within a week or two as the stage of development progresses the fetal pole will appear.
To confirm this get a scan done after next 10 days
